WELCOME

Welcome to the official blog for Rainy Days, this is my major project for my final year at university. I want to create an animation that warps reality, excites the audience and inspires children so they can see the positive sides and want to discover the joys of rainy days. Remember to keep checking out this blog so you can see the development and progression of the project.

You can also find me on Facebook and Twitter where I will also be posting regular updates and images for this project. If you follow the links below like my page or follow (for twitter) to keep updated.

If you haven't already done so check out www.jnpanimation.com for more of my work.

Project Proposal
Major Project Animation 2014: ‘Rainy Days’

The purpose of this project is to produce a 2D animated short that will show off my skills and abilities to the world and prospective employers. I will be producing my final project using 2D animating software such as Flash and Corel painter as well as Photoshop and after effects for additional techniques to get the desired effects that I want and further develop my expertise in the 2D art form.

The project must be a length of 30sec to 1:30min, to fit the specifications required. I will therefore be aiming to complete my animation in a time of 40-50 seconds so that I can show off what I want in a shorter amount of time and still allow the story to be clear to the audience. I believe this to be an ‘ideal’ time for the final animation as it is just long enough to get everything I want in and not too short that the film becomes unclear.

To begin the animation process I will need to produce concept designs, backgrounds, develop the story, story board and produce a clear and professional, high quality animatic that can effectively tell the story in its simplest form. After all of the pre-production processes have been completed I will then progress to start animating, I still am yet to decide what the most effective approach is to allow me to get the desired effect, I will begin by animating roughly on flash first of all (outline animation) I will then go on to place the flash files into Corel Painter which I will then be able to use to colour in the pre animated scenes with different paint textures to give my animation a traditional and animated Hybrid style. These paint styles will be decided as I progress with the development of the animation.

There will be key aspects that I will need to take into consideration when producing my film, these are:  Interesting and effective camera angles, composition, Continuity, Audience Interaction and Character Interaction.
My aims for this film are for it to be engaging, fun and mystical so that it may have the possibility of bringing back memories to older generations as well as exciting younger audiences.
I also aim to reach international audiences by uploading my final film to the web to create interest in my work as well as giving people something unusual and quirky to look at and hopefully bring joy and happiness to those who may view it.

_________________________________________________________________

Key elements of my film:

Characters: I will have a maximum of 10 characters in my film 2 of them will be human and my main characters; the others will be fantasy paint animals. These characters must have a strong design that will allow audiences to clearly identify with them and immediately establish an audience/character bond to make the animation as effective as possible.

Backgrounds: The backgrounds will be produced using Photoshop and will be have a similar aesthetic to a Cotswold village, quite, picturesque and magical.

Sound: I will be using a variety of sounds throughout my animation and will be trying to find someone to compose some music for the film. There is no dialogue in this short.

The animation must be completed by the 7/5/2014 and rendered using correct formatting so that it can be viewed on a variety of screens as well as being compatible with DVD and online uploading. I will be aiming to complete the above by the 25/4/2014 so that I can tweak and rectify any issues.

Animation Breakdown/Rough Storyline

A Rainy Day
An Animated Visual Journey

Jamie Nathaniel Price – University of Portsmouth
Major Project/Final Animation

Opening Shot:

Fade in from black background to opening shot of rain falling/rolling down a window, include condensation patches etc. view from window reveals a thunderous sky. Very dismal, no life, boring, all of the feelings a child would have on a rainy day.

Shot hold for 3-5 seconds to establish environment.
Sound: Gentle rain tapping on the window.

Title Sequence:

Title reading: Rainy Days appears on the screen using a fade in, this should last from 3-4 seconds to allow viewers to have time to read the text.

Scene 1:

Camera pans down slightly to reveal main set, an underpass bridge with a river running underneath can be seen. Kids can be seen finishing off a chalk drawing on the outside wall, just as the rain gets heavier and faster the kids hide under the bridge for shelter.

As they hide under the bridge a loud clap of lightning can be heard and the camera slowly zooms into the house/window where the film starts. A small child peers out of the window and sees the artwork slowly washing/melting off of the wall.

Scene 2:

As the colours keep on washing off they spread on the ground and leave a trail of colour until they meet the rivers edge where they swirl and mix around to create a river of colour.

As the colours spread another rumble of thunder can be heard and a lightning bolt follows and hits the surface of the water, turning the colours into a neon form. As the electricity fades the child in the window walks down toward the edge of the water to see what has happened, as he peers into the water a huge colourful whale jumps out of the water and splashes the colour onto the riverbanks. As splash rises the small child falls backward in shock and his mother calls from the doorway.

Scene 3:
As each splash/puddle of colour settles more children start to come out of their houses to see what is going on, as groups of children walk towards the river bank and various puddles, the puddles start to pulsate and abruptly come to life and turn into various creatures and plants creating a new environment full of colour. At this point in time the rain has slowly subsided and the lightning and thunder has stopped, the sky is still cloudy and dismal, but it is at this point the colours are at their most vibrant.

As the children become more inclined to be friends with the mystical creatures which they are now touching and communicating with establishing a bond similar to a human to their pet, a close up of one of the creatures and the child from the window comes into view. The close up shows the friendship between the animal and the child and as this connection is established the clouds begin to part and rays of sunlight begin to cover the area where the children are.

Scene 4/Final Scene:

As the sunlight increases the animals look to the sky and begin evaporating into clouds of chalk, as they start to slowly deteriorate they look their new friends/children in the eye and slowly blow away into the air. The children look upset, showing that rainy days can be fun. The camera follows the smoke clouds into the opening in the clouds as they become fainter.

End credits 6-8 sec

Rough initial storyboard

Below is an image of my initial storyboard, I have drawn this so that I can develop my story, edit scenes out of the story as well as allowing me to add new scenes in that will hopefully improve and strengthen my idea.

As you can see these initial drawings are very rough, as said before they have been created so that I can develop my story, keep a look out for some more designs and an updated storyboard and animatic. Please click on the images to enlarge.

Initial village sketch

Final image

First layer of colour

Finished outline
Initial sketch

This is a design for the houses that will be in my animation's village, I started off with a simple outline before beginning to add in the colour, shadow and additional details. When I get round to animating the scene, one of my characters will be sitting in the window above the red door and I will add a glow to indicate that there is life in the house.

The finalised image has been darkened, as I want the scene's mood to be miserable and cold like the mood that you would feel on a rainy, stormy day.

These images have been produced using sketchbook pro.
